and staining properties characteristic of normal intracellular liver mitochondnia (8). The method consists essentially in counting fresh mitochondria dispersed at random in a known volume of suspension, and it can be applied to the study of the number of mitochondria per normal rat liver cell. Preliminary results are here with reported for the liver cell in other physiologi cal and pathological conditions.
